Aunt Nancy's Salon

Picture
Aunt Nancy is a South Carolinian evolution of the term "Anansi," one of the many words from around the world that describe the spider. As I was creating my work in the summer of 2012, I was having a hard time figuring out how the gender of my spiders were working: were my figures male, or female? I finally decided to name by big spider Aunt Nancy, and she is a drag queen form of Anansi, who I feel walked with me this summer and taught me what it meant to be a freaky thing through my artwork.

The pictures below are how I set up this work for MAT Graduate Exhibition, Amalgamate, which showed from November 4-13, 2011.
